“It is the most prestigious event of its kind in South Africa for young performers in music, dance, and drama, and is annually presented over four elimination rounds,” said their mom, Anna Chen.

A panel of esteemed judges, including producers, actors, musicians, directors, professors, dancers, and educators, evaluate the performances.

Both Connor and Sienna impressed the judges, making it through to the quarter final round. Sienna’s talent shone brightly, as she proceeded to the finals and won the classical/crossover music category for the intermediate phase.

Under the guidance of mom and piano teacher Chen, and flute mentor Malané Hofmeyr-Burger, the brother and sister have clearly honed their skills.

Connor and Sienna said, like preparing for all competitions, it is hard work to persist in practicing everyday. However, they enjoy setting goals for themselves, working hard and trying their best to achieve them.

“I am always up for a challenge,” said Connor. “And even though I didn’t make it to the finals this year, I will carry on challenging myself. I am also an avid tennis player and recently competed in the Tennis SA National Junior’s Championship.”

Sienna’s next major performance will be as a soloist at the Concerto Concert with the Johannesburg Symphony Orchestra in June. “I enjoy performing and challenging myself with advanced repertoires,” she said. “I also enjoy watching others perform, and making friends at competitions.”
