SHOWnews: SHOWnews Giving Emily In Paris | SHOWstudio
Stop drooling at the headline. Mrs. Prada and her irascible change agents at Miu Miu have not opened a genuine library. No, Carsten Höller hasn’t recreated Prada’s industrial strength tube slide for public enjoyment. Not again anyways. And no, Patrizio Bertelli won’t be reading to children on field trip Fridays. The literal, literary happening is called Summer Reads, an initiative spearheaded by Miu Miu to promote the importance of written matter. This novel, imaginative series heralds green gardens — parks and recreation — for contemplative audiences to get into books. In a typical Miu Miu move, meaning thoughtfully fun and female, select books from writers Simone de Beauvoir (recently featured in SHOWnews here) and Fumiko Enchi were curated by the house. So events attended in Paris, Beijing, Hong Kong and Milan will have complimentary copies of The Inseparables (Simone) and The Waiting Years (Fumiko) on hand. Each book is bound in full Miu Miu uniform with bookmarks, reading clips and library stamps.
In its 2025 edition, Der Eigene emerges as the time-tested journal on contemporary queer life it is known for, this time distilled by Collier Schorr. The publication was revived three years ago by Rimowa and Editor-in-Chief Luis Venegas. Venegas’ Der Eigene continues revolutionary gay press coverage on literature, art, photography and politics since 1896, anew in Schorr’s trademark black and white portraiture and fragmented dialogues. Identities contained in each subject, cast by Nicola Kast, glows in power from their personal frameworks. Amber Later’s soft defiance or multidisciplinary artist Shikeith’s unassailable stillness. Der Eigene hums with unapologetic directness of artists, teachers and dancers posing as themselves.
Each subject features two signature Collier Schorr black and white photographs with an interview theme on collective belonging. An essay by Charlie Porter ties everything together with the intention of documenting queer life in New York City, circa-2025. Available from 24 June on, 300 limited copies will be available at Bookmarc (New York), Andreas Murkudis (Berlin), Yvon Lambert (Paris) and Climax Books (London). Get loud, proud and shopping!
Writing about product categories feels very last ditch. Our SHOWnews readers have eyes. Do they really need to read us rambling about velour basketball tracksuits, madras jerseys and mudcloth sportswear? Complaints aside, 5th Quarter from Denim Tears attempts to steer the conversation elsewhere. Basketball is used as a framework, but the actual subject is what remains after the final whistle. Founder Tremaine Emory’s latest launch offers a candid look at the idea of athleticism being the height of Black success, positioning professional sports as a reflection of America’s broader attitudes about racial stereotypes. What happens if you never go pro versus what spoils may come if you do?
Denim Tears articulates a polemic underneath their product release. Mudcloth prints on sweatpants and zip hoodies, plus nylon pullovers recall high school gyms and concrete blacktops. Former NBA player Rafer Alston has a signature basketball while coach John Thompson Jr's iconic game towels are reinterpreted. The Thompson family is avowed publicly in America for prioritising young Black male college educations in true lockstep with basketball. The game of life requires a college degree for Black athletes as the Thompson family sees it. Their massive footnote underpins a bigger message within 5th Quarter. Equal parts literal, symbolic and so so weighty, 5th Quarter is a dedication to legends who transcended basketball, yet holds space for reckoning with what comes after.
Product designer Salehe Bembury turns untraditional footwear into hype beats from emotional, inspiring touchstones. Typography, living organisms, even the brolic as hell Super Shredder from TMNT is how Bembury articulates form through craft. Several hits include the Crocs Pollex, New Balance 990v2 and the recently released 991v2. Bembury designs from an emotional place since the 90s — Jordan 11s, fingerprints, Nike Ndstrukts. Sneakerheads owe a lot to Bembury. His new partnership with Puma offers an opportunity to pay the love forward.
This week in Paris, Puma and Salehe Bembury will christen their new design partnership with Puma House. Marking Bembury’s first shoe shape with Puma — Velum SB featuring Nitrofoam — Puma wrapped an experiential atmosphere into proceedings. Guests are encouraged to enter the vibrant mind of Bembury, in active dialogue with man, machine, nature and supernature. The new Velum will be staged as a historical artifact. Bembury’s signature designs plus enjoyment for organic shapes takes the Velum beyond a mere shoe at a routine pop-up. Puma brings elements of its H-Street installation event from Seoul, to Paris. Visitors will have an exclusive chance to preview Puma’s Velum, conceived through Salehe Bembury, up close starting 25 June.
Puma x Salehe Bembury is from 25 to 27 June at Puma House, 18 Rue Saint Gilles 75003, Paris
Since MM6 Maison Margiela recently released a new Pre-Spring collection as well as a Summer Essentials edit, they are firmly on our radar while daily Paris temps reach 38º. MM6 encourages variety and versatility for their clever audience. You wear and style precisely how you become inspired. Whether repetitive or distorted from the lookbook, no one cares. It is all up to you. This likely explains the absence of a figurehead creative director. There is no one to complain to except yourself.
The new AVP collection balances ideas from gender to gender for democratic shapes. Meanwhile, the Summer In Style capsule leans towards womenswear categories with a wide-leg jean on the menswear side. Again, since Paris is frying pan hot right now, best to order the MM6 numeric ballerina flat or diaphanous slip dress to avoid public meltation. While plotting out your Pre-Spring 26 wishlist, just keep one MM6 rule in mind: equity lies between products for a pleasurable wardrobe. In this way, your power lies in your personal impulses. Run wild, just do it with MM6 opera gloves.
