O'Neal will reportedly be joining in a voluntary role with the program, where his son, , recently transferred from Florida A&M following the hiring of former NBA point guard as head coach.
"Shaquille O'Neal has agreed to become the men's basketball general manager of Sacramento State, sources tell ESPN. It will be a voluntary role for Shaq, whose son, Shaqir O'Neal, also plays for Sac State under Mike Bibby. Shaq and Bibby form a star duo as college GM and coach," Charania wrote on his X account.
O'Neal is the latest high-profile athlete to take on a college general manager position following Golden State Warriors guard , who was named as an assistant general manager at his alma mater, Davidson, last month and retired NFL quarterback , who returned to his alma mater, Stanford, as a general manager in 2024. Sacramento State went 7-25 under interim head coach during the 2024-25 season following a combined 28-42 record under former head coach , who took the associate head coach position at LSU last year.
The Hornets have never made an NCAA Tournament appearance since being promoted to Division I during the 1991-92 season and have only finished with a winning record twice in that span.
