Sean Chambers marks court return as player in Bayugan exhibition
SEAN Chambers thought the organizers in Bayugan City were joking when he was told that he was going to play.
After all, he came to Agusan del Sur with the sole purpose of giving his Far Eastern University side more seasoning as the Tamaraws competed in the Mayor Kirk Asis Open Invitational Basketball Tournament.
“But when they handed me the jersey in the first banquet when we arrived, I guess it’s for real,” he told Spin.ph laughing.
Chambers tried his best to bring back his old self for the people of Bayugan City, but the 60-year-old admitted: “I was moving probably moving about 50-percent than I was back in my playing days.”
Despite his advanced age, the six-time PBA champion still got his licks and tried to put on a show for the locals, teaming up with fellow coaches from University of Santo Tomas, Adamson, Letran, and Jose Rizal University and sharing: “My statline was 14 points, seven rebounds and seven assists against the Bayugan LGU team.”

“That was my first organized game as a player since returning here in the Philippines,” Chambers noted.
“It was fun and I was honored to do it because the people here in Bayugan still know me from my Alaska playing days, you know being in the province," he continued.
"As I told my players, when you play the game the right way and you respect the game, they’ll remember you forever, and what they remember about me is me being Mr. 100 Percent back in my playing career.”
This also provided Chambers an opportunity to put his money where his mouth is for his players who watched him score bucket after bucket.
“The players watched it and they were impressed that I can still get buckets when I wanted to,” he said. “I’m telling them it’s the mindset: if you set your mind on something and you want to get it, you can get it done. Once I’m committed, I’m committed,” he said.
More than anything, it also provided an avenue for Chambers to tick off one item in his checklist: to play alongside Rommel Adducul.
“It was fun cause I got a chance to play with Rommel Adducul. I admired his play back when we were still playing and I always wanted to play with that guy,” he remarked of the now-Adamson deputy.

“I just wish he was in the PBA when I was playing days because he was so talented and so fun to watch.”
As much joy as it gave Chambers to show what he’s still made of for the Bayugan City faithful, he just wished one last thing.
“They gave me jersey no. 16. So it wasn’t my number, really,” he said with a big smile. "Mr. 100 Percent was Mr. 100 Percent, but [my game there] was probably just 60-percent."
