Scan, Track, Save: Teen's AI App Turns Receipts Into Savings
Shaurya Gupta is a 14-year-old Indian-Canadian who designed 'SpendSmart.' A free, open-source, ad-free iOS app using artificial intelligence that eliminates the hassle of tracking expenses. By using an AI scanner to scan the receipts and organize expenses into categories. The app's mission is to provide an effective and simple way for users to manage and view their finances.
SpendSmart uses AI to read receipts, extract important information, and categorize it according to expenditure. Users can either take a photo of receipts or upload saved receipts, and the app reads out the receipts and presents them to the user through a simplistic dashboard. This functionality means that one doesn’t have to do any data entry and is, in fact, the easiest way of managing spending and tracking expenses.

SpendSmart is exclusively user-friendly because it does not collect any user-specific information, not to be confused with personal information (PI). SpendSmart is completely free to download and offer and has no fees, charges, or subscription costs for use for anyone, anywhere. SpendSmart is also open-source, so it allows for contributions from outside users, which introduces openness to the developer community.
Shaurya Gupta has been coding since the age of 9 and transitioned from block coding to Swift and SwiftUI when he began coding for iOS. All the hard work paid off when he was awardas the Swift Student Challenge winner at WWDC 2024 and was ultimately invited to meet with Apple's CEO, Tim Cook, one-on-one. Gupta is continuing to work on SpendSmart and is looking to add features and perhaps looking to release on other platforms, as projects require him to receive an endorsement.
