Sayville flag football wins Long Island title, eyes state crown

Published 1 week ago3 minute read

Sayville quarterback Olivia Moynihan and wide receiver Ava Vadyak agreed that the Division defense was a concern during practice this week. The duo said the team's preparation centered around finding space in the Blue Dragons' defense.

“We were very prepared. We had a lot of respect for them," Moynihan said of a Division team that posted 10 shutouts and allowed a total of 25 points all season. "They had our attention.”

Moynihan threw four first-half touchdowns, including three to Vadyak, as Sayville opened a 27-point halftime lead and cruised to a 33-6 win over Division to capture the Long Island Class B championship at Longwood High School in Middle Island on Saturday.

“Our goal is to win a state title,” said Moynihan, who added a 22-yard TD run in the second half. “And this was another step in that direction.”

Sayville (20-0), the defending Long Island champion, lost in the Class B state championship last season.

The Golden Flashes will meet Webster in a Class B state semifinal at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Cortland High School at a time to be determined.

“We’ve put in the time,” Sayville coach Reade Sands said. “It shows in our communication on both sides of the ball.”

Moynihan, who defied heavy winds to throw for 205 yards, opened the scoring with a 5-yard touchdown pass to Vadyak. She found Trinity Ricevuto for the one-point conversion for the 7-0 lead with 19:07 left in the first half.

The Sayville defense set up a short field when linebacker Aniela Marino intercepted a pass and returned it to midfield. Four plays later, Moynihan found Vadyak all alone in the end zone for a 12-yard scoring strike. Moynihan hit Camryn Quinlan for the one-point conversion for the 14-0 lead with 11:33 left.

“Ava is not always my first read,” Moynihan said. “But she always works her way open when I’m on the move.”

Moynihan directed a 55-yard drive capped by a 12-yard scoring pass to Ella Trama. And then found Trama for the one-point conversion for the 21-0 lead with 2:55 left.

Vadyak caught her third touchdown pass of the first half from 10 yards with 1:24 remaining for the 27-0 lead.

“We have a special connection,” Vadyak said. “I find the open space in the defense, and she gets me the ball.”

The significance of the score was not lost on Moynihan.

“They shut out 10 opponents this year,” she said. “We were concerned.”

To put it in the proper perspective, the Sayville offense scored more in one half than 16 opponents did all season long against Division.

Abby Gregory scored on a 49-yard run to avert the shutout for Division (15-2).

“We brought the energy today and everyone got to play,” Vadyak said. “All of our teammates played in the championship, that’s great.”
