Save the Judiciary Demo: Afenyo-Markin calls on IGP to investigate police officer over alleged assault -
Minority Leader in Parliament, Hon. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has formally petitioned the Inspector General of Police (IGP) over an alleged assault by a police officer during the ‘Save the Judiciary’ protest held on Monday, May 5, 2025.
In his petition, Afenyo-Markin called for investigations and disciplinary action against Constable Forson, the officer he claims physically assaulted him during the demonstration.
“I hereby formally petition your office to investigate and take appropriate disciplinary action against Constable Forson, a tall, fair, and heavily built officer who was stationed at the entrance of Parliament House to provide security during today’s “‘Save the Judiciary” demonstration. Constable Forson assaulted me at the entrance of Parliament House during the demonstration.”
Afenyo-Markin also expressed concern about what it described as “misleading narratives” circulating in the public domain regarding the incident and sought to clarify the facts through a formal complaint.
“To address this incident and to correct misleading narratives circulating in the public domain, I have issued a public statement detailing the events as they occurred. I rely on the said statement, which is hereby attached for your information and further action.”
Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has issued a statement acknowledging the circulation of multiple video recordings from the protest.
According to the statement, the service has initiated a review of the footage and written to the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Bagbin, requesting the release of Afenyo-Markin to assist with investigations into a counterclaim that he assaulted a police officer during the protest.
The police have confirmed that Constable Forson, the officer at the center of the controversy, will also be cooperating with the investigation.
