Sardaar Ji 3 Controversy

The controversy surrounding actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh and his film "Sardaar Ji 3" has intensified since its trailer release, drawing both calls for a ban and empathy for its producers. At the heart of the backlash is the casting of Pakistani actress Hania Aamir in an Indian production, a decision that sparked significant criticism, particularly after the Pahalgam terror attack and India's subsequent counter-operation, Operation Sindoor. Hania Aamir's public criticism of Operation Sindoor further fueled public outrage, placing Diljit Dosanjh under increasing scrutiny.
Renowned writer and lyricist Javed Akhtar has weighed in on the issue, speaking at NDTV’s Creators Manch. Akhtar expressed sympathy for the filmmakers, noting that the movie was shot before the recent conflict erupted. He highlighted that no Pakistani money is at stake, but rather Indian investments, suggesting that halting the film's release would be counterproductive. Akhtar urged the government and the censor board to approach the situation with some understanding, proposing that while such castings should not recur, "Sardaar Ji 3" should be allowed its release given it was produced prior to the heightened tensions.
The ramifications of the controversy extend beyond the film itself, with the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) sending a letter to filmmaker Imtiaz Ali, advising him to sever professional ties with Diljit Dosanjh. Imtiaz Ali is currently collaborating with Diljit on an untitled film slated for a Baisakhi 2026 release. Although initial reports circulated about Diljit being dropped from "Border 2," these were later debunked. Despite the escalating situation and calls from figures like Mika Singh for him to apologize, Diljit Dosanjh has yet to issue a public statement addressing the matter. In response to the rising Indo-Pak tensions following the Pahalgam terror attack, the producers of "Sardaar Ji 3" ultimately decided to release the film exclusively overseas on June 27, 2025, foregoing its domestic release in India.
