The wife of the Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, has partnered with the Orunsii WellCare Foundation to fund the surgical operations of children in public hospitals across the state.

As a result, the First Lady, alongside members of the foundation, visited three hospitals on Tuesday, May 13, 2025 where children needing surgical care are being attended to. The hospitals are the Lagos State General Hospital, Odan; Femi Gbajabiamila General Hospital, Surulere, and Alimosho General Hospital where financial donations were made to support children patients in need of surgical care.

The Head of the Paediatric Surgery Unit at the Lagos State General Hospital, Odan, Dr. Adiukwu Chidiogo, explained that many of the children suffer from conditions such as hernia and undescended testis. She emphasised that these conditions, if not treated early, can affect the child for life.

“The children are voiceless, they rely only on their parents or kind-hearted people to bring them for treatment. Every delay increases the risk to their lives and future. This kind of support is timely and very impactful,” she said.

At Femi Gbajabiamila General Hospital, Surulere, the Head of Medical and Social Services, Mr. Majeed Olabode, thanked the governor’s wife and the foundation for their timely support. “We are happy today. We always try to give care before asking for money, and this support came at the right time. We have a 9-year-old due for surgery next week, and the family is struggling. This donation means a lot,” he said.

Speaking during the visit, Sanwo-Olu appreciated the hospital staff for their dedication, underscoring the importance of working with reliable organisations. “Many NGOs come to us with promises but no proof of what they are doing. The Orunsii WellCare Foundation has shown commitment, and we are proud to partner with them. A lot of people come into hospitals without enough money, yet these hospitals still find a way to treat them. That’s why we are here to support their efforts,” she said.

The Medical Director of Randle General Hospital and Orunsii Foundation Programme Coordinator, Dr. Olumide Sojirin, also spoke on the foundation’s work since its launch in 2021. He said they focus on mental health awareness, support for school children, and care for the elderly.

“This donation is not a one-time thing. We will continue to reach out to primary healthcare centres and more people in need. This is just a seed, we plan to do more,” he said.

At Alimosho General Hospital, Igando, the Head of Social Welfare, Mrs. Oluwasola Joke, also thanked the foundation for showing up at a time when support is most needed
