The San Antonio Spurs are one of the few NBA teams that entered this season without many ambitions, at least in terms of winning. Despite this, the quality of their young players, particularly Victor Wembanyama, kept them in the play-in race. However, an injury to Wembanyama’s shoulder right after the All-Star weekend kept the young Frenchman off the court for the rest of the season, and the team ultimately gave up on their play-in hopes. There was still some ambition, as evidenced by the acquisition of De’Aaron Fox from the Sacramento Kings, who was supposed to be a good partner for Wembanyama.
Unfortunately, Fox also quickly got injured, leaving the young players like Devin Vassell and Stephon Castle to step up and lead the team in the absence of their two main stars. The team has received significant support throughout the season from the experienced Chris Paul, who, with his basketball IQ and experience, has helped the team overcome certain obstacles. A similar role has been played by Harrison Barnes. Their contribution has been crucial, especially since Gregg Popovich has been unable to coach the team due to a stroke, effectively missing most of the season.
In contrast, the Golden State Warriors, unlike their rivals in this game, are not in a rush, as the future is ahead of them. Golden State, however, doesn’t have much time left. More specifically, the best player in the history of this team, Steph Curry, is gradually approaching the end of his career, and it would be a shame for him to spend his final years in a team with no championship ambitions. The front office decided to provide him with a few more attempts at a title run, or at least another shot at the Western Conference finals. They took advantage of Jimmy Butler’s troubles with the Miami Heat and decided to bring him in. The acquisition of Butler has so far proven to be a smart move, as it seems that his arrival has brought a fresh energy to the team, which now looks significantly better.
Butler’s impact on the Warriors is evident, as they have achieved 17 wins and just 4 losses since he joined the team. Despite the only four losses, the one against the Miami Heat will certainly sting, especially for Butler, who didn’t part ways with the Heat on the best of terms. The main change in the Warriors’ game has been their significantly improved defense after the All-Star break. Since that point, the Warriors have had the best defense in the entire league, and there is even talk that Draymond Green could win the Defensive Player of the Year award.
In the game played in November, the Spurs won 104-94, but the power dynamics are different now.
Victor Wembanyama, De’Aaron Fox, and Charles Bassey will not play for the San Antonio Spurs. Gary Payton will not play for the Warriors, while Stephen Curry is questionable.
