Samsung Launches Slimmest Smartphone, Galaxy S25 Edge

Samsung has launched the Galaxy S25 Edge, a thinner version of its flagship smartphone, aiming to maintain momentum in its mobile division amidst competition and uncertain economic conditions. The Galaxy S25 Edge is remarkably thin, measuring just 5.8 millimeters and weighing 163 grams, making it one of the thinnest smartphones available. It will be available for purchase starting May 30, with a starting price of $1,099.
The launch is unusual, occurring just four months after the regular S25 series launch in January. Typically, Samsung unveils new high-end devices, such as foldable phones, later in the year. This early release underscores Samsung's strategy to capitalize on the success of the S25 range as it faces increasing competition and macroeconomic uncertainties. The company reported a revenue and profit jump in its mobile division during the first quarter, driven by strong S25 series sales. However, Samsung anticipates a decrease in smartphone demand in the second quarter due to seasonal trends and potential adjustments from global tariff policies.
The Galaxy S25 Edge is designed to appeal to consumers who desire a flagship experience in a more compact form. It features a 6.7-inch display, similar to the Galaxy S25+, but in a thinner and lighter package. The device includes a dual-camera system and Samsung's latest AI features. Ben Wood, chief analyst at CCS Insight, noted that "thin is most definitely in" for the second half of 2025, with Samsung leading the way with its slim design. Apple is expected to follow suit with a thin version of its flagship device, the iPhone 17 Air.
The Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge has a 6.7-inch QHD+ Dynamic AMOLED display with a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate. It has 12GB of RAM and storage options of 256GB and 512GB. The device is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy processor and includes a 3,900mAh battery. It comes in three colors: Titanium Silver, Titanium Icy Blue, and Titanium Jet Black. The rear camera setup includes a 200MP wide lens and a 12MP ultrawide lens, while the front camera is 12MP. The phone also features Samsung’s AI frameworks, including Now Brief and Now Bar, and access to Google Gemini.
The Galaxy S25 Edge offers a blend of flagship features while maintaining an affordable price. Pre-orders are available now, with shipping beginning May 30, 2025. The device is available through Samsung’s website, Samsung Experience Stores, and online retailers like Lazada, Shopee, and TikTok. Early pre-orders include a complimentary storage upgrade. In Singapore, the 512GB model is priced at $1,808, and the 256GB model at $1,628. Accessories like silicone cases, Kindsuit cases, clear cases, and anti-reflecting films are also available.
T-Mobile is offering the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge for free to customers who trade in their smartphone, even if it’s cracked, on the Experience Beyond plan. The plan includes benefits like flexible device upgrades, streaming bundles, travel perks, and a 5-year price guarantee. Customers can also get the device for $100 when adding a line and trading in an eligible device on Business Unlimited Ultimate. The device comes in Titanium Silver, Titanium Jetblack, and Titanium Icyblue, with 256GB and 512GB storage options.
Samsung is emphasizing the structural changes made to reduce the thickness of internal components, including the printed circuit board and thermal systems, to meet user demand for slimmer, more portable smartphones. The company asserts that the S25 Edge can be used without concerns about overheating, thanks to an engineered thinner vapor chamber. Despite concerns about the smaller 3,900mAh battery, Samsung claims improved processors and AI frameworks will extend its lifespan.
The Galaxy S25 Edge is part of a new wave of ultra-thin phones, offering a similar experience to other Galaxy S25 models but in a much thinner package. While the phone lacks a telephoto lens and has a smaller battery compared to the S25 Ultra, its slim design and inclusion of key features like the 200MP main rear lens and Samsung’s AI capabilities make it an appealing option for those seeking a smaller, more portable device. The Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge aims to attract consumers who value portability without sacrificing performance.
