Saint Laurent's 'Love Letters' is the Ultimate Tribute to Romance and Longing | SHOWstudio

Published 1 month ago3 minute read

Has there ever been a love story in fashion quite like that of Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé? Their partnership was a heady mix of passion, power, and artistic brilliance—equal parts devotion and drama as the duo built one of the greatest couture houses in history. Their love story culminated in 2008 when Bergé immortalised their bond in Lettres à Yves, a collection of posthumous love letters that read like a bittersweet symphony of longing and loss. Both a memoir and memorial to one of fashion’s most enduring romances, it marked their unbreakable connection that transcended time.

Now, Saint Laurent rekindles this spirit of romance with Love Letters, a new Saint Laurent Editions book that delves into the raw, unfiltered intimacy of romantic correspondence. Under the creative direction of Anthony Vaccarello, the project itself becomes a love letter—an ode to longing, devotion, and emotions too profound to be confined to a mere text message.

At the heart of Love Letters is the power of words, their urgency, and their ability to evoke desire. Featuring a printed QR code, the book offers more than just a visual experience—it’s a portal into the sonic realm of romance. Through this digital extension, voices breathe new life into some of history’s most passionate letters. Charlotte Gainsbourg channels the yearning of Virginia Woolf for Vita Sackville-West, while Vassili Schneider lends his voice to Mozart’s affectionate notes to his wife Vienna, alongside the tumultuous words exchanged between poets Arthur Rimbaud and Paul Verlaine.

But Saint Laurent doesn’t stop at the written or spoken word. The project unfolds into a series of films directed by Mitch Ryan, starring Zoë Kravitz, Rosé, and Cooper Koch. These cinematic interpretations bring to life the letters of Sid Vicious to Nancy Spungen, Oscar Wilde to Lord Alfred Douglas, and Leo Tolstoy to Valeria Arsenev—each a testament to love’s consuming fire, whether tragic, rebellious, or poetic.

Die-hard fans of K-pop star Rosé will also get the chance to indulge in two spoken-word readings of Oscar Wilde's Letter to Lord Douglas and Leo Tolstoy's Letter to Valeria Arsenev, featuring Metronomy’s Love Letters, remixed by Enfant Sauvage. Adding to the romance, these evocative readings will extend beyond personal listening, as select Saint Laurent stores—including Rive Droite in Los Angeles, Babylone in Paris, the flagship in Seoul, and the Meatpacking store in New York—will feature vintage-style phone booths where visitors can immerse themselves in love letters read aloud, as if eavesdropping on intimate whispers from another era.

Love Letters is a reflection on connection, on the gravity of words meant for just one other person. Whether read, heard, or seen, Saint Laurent’s latest project is an invitation to indulge in the romance of language—and to believe, once again, in the enduring power of a well-written ‘I love you.’
