The decision follows heightened fear across the country in the wake of recent violent protests that led to widespread destruction of property and business premises.

The mall's management issued the notice on Sunday, July 6, following a security advisory from G4S, warning of possible unrest and disruptions in Nairobi.

"Based on a security advisory from G4S, dated July 5, 2025, regarding potential protests and civil unrest on July 7, 2025, Thika Road Mall management has decided to close the mall on that day to ensure the safety of all tenants, staff and property," the statement read in part.

The closure, according to TRM management, is a precautionary measure to protect tenants, staff, and mall property from any harm during the anticipated protests.

While the closure notice circulated widely online, the mall’s operations manager, Altaf Parpia, clarified that it was an internal communication intended solely for tenants to help them prepare adequately.

"We appreciate your understanding and cooperation. Please contact Altaf on 0733623308 or Hiren on 0706374274 if you have any questions or require further information," the statement advised.

He noted that no public announcement had been planned.

TRM is among several business establishments that have alerted tenants about possible closures ahead of the Saba Saba commemoration, which this year is expected to spark fresh protests calling for accountability, justice, and economic reforms.

Saba Saba, Swahili for 'Seven Seven,' marks the historic July 7, 1990, pro-democracy protests led by opposition figures such as Kenneth Matiba, Charles Rubia, and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga.

The nationwide demonstrations challenged the one-party rule of the late former president Daniel Arap Moi and played a key role in the eventual return of multiparty democracy in Kenya.

Meanwhile, despite its initiation 35 years ago, Saba Saba remains a powerful symbol of Kenya’s enduring fight for justice, evolving beyond its origins in the push for multiparty democracy.

Over the decades, it has withstood shifting political tides, becoming a rallying cry for dignity, employment, digital rights, and accountability.

Today, Gen Z has revitalised the movement with bold, tech-driven activism across platforms like TikTok, X, WhatsApp, and Instagram.

In other news, Lang'ata MP Felix Odiwuor alias Jalang'o expressed concern that the recent youth-led protest movement had become politically hijacked, urging young people to focus their energy on the upcoming 2027 General Election.

He encouraged the youth to channel their grievances into structured engagement and support ongoing government initiatives.

The MP also appealed for peace during the Saba Saba commemorations and called for organised platforms to shape a clear youth agenda.
