Ruto: UDA-ODM pact to address pressing national issues
President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga have formally signed a cooperation pact that will see the two political factions work together.
Speaking during the signing ceremony at KICC, President Ruto dismissed speculations that the deal was centred on sharing political positions or future elections.
“This MoU is not about sharing positions or winning elections. It is about the people and the interests of Kenya,” he said.
Ruto noted that the partnership between the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) was driven by the need to foster national unity and implement the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) report to address critical issues affecting Kenyans.
“We must rise above political differences and embrace a higher vision of the Kenya we all deserve. We, the leaders of UDA and ODM, commit to implementing the NADCO report to address key national issues, including the cost of living, youth unemployment, and gender inclusion. We pledge to foster inclusivity in governance and development,” he stated.
The president lauded Odinga for his bold decision to work with the government toward a national agenda despite potential political backlash.
“I congratulate Raila Odinga and the ODM party for their boldness and courage to take a stand for Kenya and the people of Kenya. It may not be a popular decision, but that does not undermine the fact that it is the right decision,” he stated.
The MoU outlines several areas of cooperation including implementation of National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) report, inclusivity, strengthening devolution, protecting the livelihoods of young people, leadership and integrity, and the right to peaceful assembly and protest.
Other issues are national debt, fight against corruption, curbing wastage of public resources and promoting government efficiency as well as protecting the sovereignty of the people, the rule of law and constitutionalism.
