Russian Bridge Collapse Onto Train Attributed to 'Illegal Interference'

Tragedy struck in Russia as two separate bridge collapses in regions bordering Ukraine resulted in multiple fatalities and dozens of injuries. In the Bryansk region, a passenger train derailed after a bridge collapsed onto it, leading to significant casualties. A second bridge collapse occurred in the Kursk region, impacting a freight train.

The most severe incident took place in the Bryansk region when a passenger train traveling from Moscow to Klimov derailed. According to reports, a bridge collapsed directly onto the railway tracks as the train was approaching or passing underneath. This catastrophic event killed seven people, including the train's driver, and left approximately 69 others injured. Initial accounts mentioned three deaths and 28 injuries, including an infant, though later, more comprehensive reports confirmed the higher figures.

Local authorities in Bryansk initially attributed the bridge collapse to "illegal interference." The region's acting governor, Alexander Bogomaz, reportedly stated that the bridge had been "blown up," blaming an explosion for the incident. Russian media, including the Baza Telegram channel which often cites security sources, also reported that initial information suggested the Bryansk bridge was destroyed by an explosion, though this was not independently verified. Governor Bogomaz assured that "Everything is being done to provide all necessary assistance to the victims."

In a separate event reported on the same night, another bridge collapsed in Russia's Kursk region as a freight train was passing over it. This incident resulted in injuries to one of the train's drivers. Local officials confirmed the collapse and the injury.

Both the Bryansk and Kursk regions border Ukraine. These incidents occurred against a backdrop of ongoing hostilities, with reports noting that since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion more than three years ago, there have been continued cross-border shelling, drone strikes, and covert raids by Ukrainian forces into these border regions, including Belgorod. There was no immediate comment from Ukraine regarding these bridge collapses.

Emergency workers were dispatched to the scene of the train derailment in Bryansk, where they worked to pull survivors from the wreckage. Russia's federal road transportation agency confirmed that the destroyed bridge in Bryansk passed above the railway tracks where the passenger train was traveling. Images and footage from the scene depicted passenger cars ripped apart and strewn amidst fallen concrete from the collapsed structure. Some social media videos appeared to show vehicles narrowly avoiding driving onto the bridge moments before its collapse.
