ROBERT PALMER WATKINS: CAREER

In an exclusive interview with uInterview, Watkins shared the story behind his decision to pursue a career in acting.

“I decided I wanted to act when I was in high school,” he said, “I did my first play and I just loved it. I just knew right then and there. I always loved art, I was always a creative kid, I used to draw and paint a lot…but when I realized I could perform and tell a story with my body on stage…something about the camaraderie too with other actors; you’re in this scene in this moment together and you are either going to sink or swim. Something about that was really cool.”

Watkins said he realized that with the first play he did, he knew right then and there that he would be doing this the rest of his life.

ROBERT PALMER WATKINS: GENERAL HOSPITAL

In June 2015, Watkins joined the cast of the long-running soap opera General Hospital as Dillon Quartermaine. Watkins told uInterview about his favorite moment in this role.

“I got to sing on General Hospital twice,” he said. “Music has always been a huge passion of mine…it’s also kind of helped with my acting roles too, like being able to sing. There’ve been roles I’ve gotten to play because of my musical abilities, and that’s been really, really cool. General Hospital, I guess, picked up on the fact that I did music.”

He explained that the show did something called a “nurses ball,” which is like a “big talent show” where characters can dance, perform music, or do a magic show.

“I sang a Shawn Mendes song the first year,” he said, recalling his rendition of “Stitches.”

“I sang a David Bowie song, ‘Modern Love,’ the second year,” he continued. “That was so much fun…Those ended up being really, really popular episodes and opened the doors in a lot of ways for me with other music opportunities…I felt like I got to bring a little more Robert into the soap world than previous days of shooting.”

Watkins continued to star in the recent horror film Trapped Inn alongside In another exclusive interview with uInterview, Watkins discussed his role in the movie.

Watkins briefly summarized the film, “It’s a movie about a cycling team training in the Alps of France. They’re staying at this Inn while they’re training, and all of a sudden, the world shuts down. It’s kind of similar to what we just went through in real life with Covid. I think the world can relate to like, how that feels to be totally isolated and trapped.”

But this film is different. “What I loved about this script and about this story is that it…steers in all different directions that you would never expect when you start watching the movie,” he said. Watkins lists off “hot topics” that appear in the film, such as AI, aliens, UFOs, and an “awesome love triangle. There’s a little bit of everything.”

Watkins described his role in the film, “My character is Greg. He’s kind of the asshole-bad guy in the film…opposite Matt Rife, who plays kind of the good guy…I like to say that Greg is just misunderstood. Throughout the movie, you see his walls start to come down and he starts to realize that he has to kind of band with Matt Rife’s character and…the love interest, actress [Gearson].”

He finished, “It’s kind of cool to see his arc…That’s what attracted me to the story and playing Greg.”

Watkins talked about his favorite scene to shoot from the film.

“Leah Sturgis [the director]…sponsors and owns a cycling team,” he said, “In the movie, when you see us on the bikes and we’re training, we’re actually riding with her actual team. So that was fun! I was like Oh s—, I feel like a legit cyclist today!”

Watkins recalled the rigor of cycling with the team, “There were definitely physically demanding days…that’s us, riding those bikes up and down this mountain…I actually have a bike crash in one of the scenes…those were physically demanding days, but I always just love when you get to learn something new.”
