Residents Protest Killing of Farmers in Ondo

Akure, Ondo State, has been gripped by protests following the recent killings of farmers and a socialite. Farmers from 13 farming settlements in the Ajagbusi area of Ala Elefosan, Akure North Local Government Area, took to the streets to demonstrate against the killing of four farmers allegedly by herdsmen. This incident occurred shortly after a previous protest over the deaths of five farmers by armed herdsmen.
The protesters, carrying leaves and the corpses of the victims, marched to the ShopRite roundabout, blocking access to the governor’s office and causing significant traffic disruptions. They demanded immediate action from Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to address the ongoing attacks on their communities. Taiwo Samuel, the traditional ruler of Adeshina Community, expressed the community's frustration, stating that three farmers were killed in the Thirteen camp of Ajagbusi, with another killed two days prior. He lamented the government's failure to secure the area despite previous promises and called for the right to self-defense.
Samuel also noted that such incidents were less frequent under the administration of the late former governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu. He emphasized the increasing insecurity and the fear among community members, stating that over 20 farmers have been killed in the past month.
In a separate incident, Adesoji Johnson Adeleye, a socialite and CEO of Klass Five Hotel, was found murdered in his hotel in Akure. He was discovered with multiple stab wounds in one of the hotel rooms. Detectives from the Ondo State Police Command have visited the scene, and the body has been taken to the morgue at the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital (UNIMEDTH), Akure.
Police Public Relations Officer Olayinka Alayande confirmed both incidents, stating that investigations are underway to apprehend the perpetrators in both cases. Tactical teams have been deployed to restore normalcy and ensure the arrest of those responsible for the farmers' killings. The case of Adeleye's murder has been transferred to the state police headquarters for further investigation.
