The suspect just couldn't stop himself from posting about what he just got away with on social media.
No, this isn't an April Fool's prank gone wrong. A 19-year-old man from Utah literally went full Grand Theft Auto on local authorities, evading them for over a month before eventually being caught.
As reported by KSL, the incident occured on February 20 in Pleasant Grove, Utah, when local law enforcement attempted to pull over a sedan without license plates. Instead of complying, the young driver chose to accelerate, running a red light and narrowly avoiding a collision with another vehicle. As the police officer activated his siren and gave chase, the suspect's speed reportedly reached a dangerous 95 miles per hour.
Concerned for public safety, the pursuing officer eventually called off the chase. However, the story was far from over. More than a month later, on March 23, authorities received an unexpected break in the case when they were sent three incriminating videos of the incident.
The footage, which the suspect himself posted on social media, shows him filming himself during various stages of the chase. In one video, he can be heard discussing the police pursuit while accelerating. Another clip captured him brandishing a black handgun while exclaiming, "I'm in GTA, bro!", which definitely isn't the kind of reference and real-life inspiration Take-Two Interactive is too pleased about.
In the third and final video, the young man can be seen recording the chasing police vehicles in his rearview mirror.
In a cunning attempt to evade capture, investigators discovered that the car, which had sported a brown wrap during the initial chase, had been changed to silver afterward.
The 19-year-old's escapade eventually caught up with him. He now faces counts of failing to respond to an officer's signal to stop, obstruction of justice, reckless endangerment, reckless driving, and using a phone while driving. This combination of felony and misdemeanor charges will likely land him behind bars for the foreseeable future.
Given how recent this incident is and how it didn't occur in Florida, the real-life inspiration for Leonida and Vice City, don't expect to see something similar happen to Grand Theft Auto 6, but we won't count out a potential reference in a future Grand Theft Auto Online update. Rockstar Games is currently working on GTA 6 with an update expected sometime in May at the next Take-Two earnings call.
