Rainfall triggers landslide in Maharashtra's Gayatri Nagar; homes damaged, residents evacuated as precaution | Thane News - Times of India
BHIWANDI: Heavy rainfall in Bhiwandi triggered a landslide in the Gayatri Nagar hillside area on Tuesday morning, damaging five illegally constructed houses. While two of the houses sustained severe damage, three others were only slightly affected, no casualties were reported. The affected houses were built with tin sheets on forest land, according to civic officials. At the time of the incident, one house was unoccupied, and three people were inside another. The section of the hill that collapsed had no residents present.
In response, the Bhiwandi Nizampura City Municipal Corporation (BNCMC) evacuated residents from the five damaged houses and ten additional nearby homes as a precautionary measure to avoid any mishap.
The residents were relocated to a local Anganwadi school.Since Monday night, Bhiwandi has been experiencing heavy rainfall, which also caused flooding in the Teen Batti and Nadi Naka areas as the Kamwari river’s water level rose, affecting several houses and shops. When some residents were reluctant to leave their homes, the authorities, in coordination with the Torrent Electricity Department, disconnected the power supply to ensure evacuation. The BNCMC disaster team remains on alert as further rainfall is expected.
