RailYatri's 2024 data reveals a nationwide reduction in train delays, with an 8 per cent improvement compared to 2023. States like Uttarakhand, Punjab, and Gujarat saw significant punctuality gains, while regions like West Bengal and Odisha faced challenges. Notably, trains like Shatabdi and Duronto showed marked improvements in punctuality, while Vande Bharat faced slight delays.

Train travellers across India experienced an overall improvement in punctuality in 2024, according to data from the RailYatri platform. The national average delay dropped by nearly 8 per cent compared to 2023, with the median delay reducing from 20 minutes to 18 minutes. While many states benefitted from timely journeys, a few regions still faced significant delays.
Passengers travelling in Uttarakhand, Punjab, and Gujarat saw substantial improvements, with delays dropping by 32 per cent, 20 per cent, and 19 per cent, respectively. For example, Uttarakhand reported an average delay reduction of 32 per cent, from 35 minutes to 24 minutes, and Gujarat saw a 19 per cent decrease in delays, making travel more convenient for commuters in these regions.
However, there were challenges in other states. West Bengal experienced a 16 per cent increase in delays, while Odisha, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala saw minor delays compared to the previous year. In particular, Odisha had the highest average delay at 69 minutes, with a median delay of 35 minutes.
State-wise analysis showed that Uttarakhand, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu experienced the least delays, with median delays of just 10 minutes, while Goa, Odisha, and Telangana faced the most delays, with median delays of up to 41 minutes.
Train type also played a role in punctuality. Humsafar Express passengers faced the highest delays, averaging 55 minutes, although there was a notable 22 per cent reduction compared to 2023. Duronto Express, Shatabdi Express, and Vande Bharat showed improvements, with Shatabdi Express seeing a 10 per cent reduction in delays.
Notable improvements were also recorded at major stations. Ahmedabad, Chennai Central, and New Delhi experienced significant reductions in delays, while Kolkata Howrah and Vishakhapatnam saw increased delays. Overall, RailYatri’s data suggests a positive trend towards improved punctuality in India’s rail network, although some regions and train types still need further attention.
