Private sector leaders have praised Professor Dodoo's (M) contribution to aligning African standards
The African Organisation for Standardisation (ARSO) has unanimously conferred the honorary title of President Emeritus on Professor Alex Dodoo, following resolutions by both its Executive Council and General Assembly.
According to Graphic Online report, the decision, taken during ARSO’s 31st General Assembly in Zanzibar, Tanzania, last Friday, recognises Professor Dodoo’s exceptional leadership in advancing continental standards for trade, safety, and sustainable development.
The title ensures his continued advisory role in shaping ARSO’s strategic direction and mentoring future standardisation leaders across Africa.
“The title of President Emeritus is reserved for leaders whose impact transcends their tenure, reflecting lifelong dedication to their field,” ARSO Secretary-General Dr Hemogene Nsengimana said.
As immediate past ARSO President and current Director-General of the Ghana Standards Authority, Professor Dodoo was instrumental in creating key ARSO structures and driving harmonisation initiatives supporting the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
Under his leadership, ARSO achieved record participation, bringing together 34 member countries, the highest in the organisation’s history.
"This honour is not just a personal milestone but shows the collective efforts of all stakeholders working toward a standardised, competitive, and quality-driven Africa,” Professor Dodoo said in his acceptance remarks.
“Our journey is far from over, and I remain committed to the vision of an Africa where standards fuel prosperity," he added.
Meanwhile, Professor Dodoo’s push for "One Standard, One Test, One Acceptance" has been crucial in reducing trade barriers and promoting economic integration across the continent.
“I hope he will still serve the needs and aspirations of ARSO in his new role,” Executive Director at the South African Bureau of Standards, Dr Sadhvir Bissoon said.
Private sector leaders also praised Professor Dodoo’s contribution to aligning African standards with global best practices.
“His appointment reaffirms the continent’s commitment to excellence,” said Antoine Anne, Regional Director of COTECNA.
As President Emeritus, Professor Dodoo is expected to focus on strengthening Africa’s quality infrastructure, advocating for emerging sectors like renewable energy and digital economies, and bridging the gap between academia, industry, and policy in standardisation.
