The Portland Trail Blazers have been making moves from top to bottom. First, Portland gave its head coach, Chauncey Billups, a contract extension. According to The Oregonian, the Portland Trail Blazers have added assistant coach Quinton Crawford to Chauncey Billups’ staff, an NBA source has confirmed to the Portland-based daily newspaper. NBA analyst Chris Haynes first reported the news.
Crawford, 34, previously served as the head coach of the G League’s Stockton Kings in Stockton, Calif. He led the Kings to the 2024-25 G League championship last season. He also served as an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Lakers, as well as an assistant video coordinator for the Sacramento Kings, Charlotte Hornets, and Orlando Magic. He also led the Lakers to the 2020 NBA Finals five years ago.
Like most other assistant coaches, Quinton Crawford has played college basketball. Crawford played the guard position for the University of Arizona from 2011 to 2013, following a transfer from Middlesex College, where he spent the first two years between 2009 and 2011. He reached the Sweet Sixteen with the Arizona Wildcats.
The Portland Trail Blazers are a work in progress. The Portland Trail Blazers finished the 2024-25 NBA regular season with a 36-46 record, an improvement from the previous season’s record of 21-61. However, the Trail Blazers’ recent efforts appear to be preparing the team ahead of next season, with the signings and re-signings of current coaches.
The Portland Trail Blazers will open the 2025 NBA preseason on the road on October 11, 2025, with a matchup against the Los Angeles Clippers at the Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle at 7:00 p.m. Pacific.
In the meantime, Portland could realistically trade for Zion Williamson, Tyler Herro, Scottie Barnes, Zach LaVine, and Giannis Antetokounmpo. In addition, Portland’s No. 11 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft could lead to the selection of Duke’s Kon Knueppel, a talented perimeter scorer and a solid ball handler.
