Police probe shooting incident during impeachment of Isiolo Governor Abdi Guyo
Police in Isiolo have launched investigations into a shooting incident and acts of vandalism that occurred at the Isiolo County Assembly during the chaos that followed Thursday’s impeachment motion against Governor Abdi Ibrahim Guyo.
Barack Abdullahi, aged 26 who was injured during the incident and is currently receiving treatment at Almasi Medical Centre in Isiolo, claims he was shot in the ankle by the Speaker of the County Assembly as a convoy was leaving the assembly premises.
Isiolo Sub-County Police Commander Joseph Mwendwa confirmed that investigations are ongoing, including efforts to identify individuals who stormed the assembly, vandalised two vehicles, smashed windows, and stole furniture and other items.
Regarding the shooting incident, Mwendwa urged caution, noting that an official report filed by a relative of the injured person described the shooter as an "unknown individual." He emphasized that the victim has not yet provided a personal statement, which is essential to advancing the investigation.
Despite the police's stance, Abdullahi's relatives have publicly alleged that the Speaker of Isiolo county assembly is responsible for the shooting.
Abdullahi claimed he was standing outside the assembly when he saw the Speaker seated in a vehicle bearing a county flag. He alleges the Speaker brandished a firearm and fired at him. Abdullahi said he attempted to flee but fell and later woke up in hospital.
His sister, Asley Salad Mohamed, has called for a swift and thorough investigation to ensure justice for her brother.
Dr. Abdikadir Mohamud, a surgeon at Almasi Medical Centre, confirmed that the bullet lodged in Abdulahi’s ankle bone was successfully removed through surgery. He stated that the injury appears to have been caused by a small-calibre weapon fired at close range, based on preliminary analysis of the bullet fragments.
When contacted via his official WhatsApp line, Speaker Mohamed Roba dismissed the allegations, stating, “The burden of proof lies with the accuser. Let the police do their job.”
