Police probe DPO accused of extortion

The Police Command in Ondo State has initiated an investigation into allegations of extortion against Ganiyu Dauda, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Igbara-Oke in the Ifedore Local Government Area. This action follows a protest by community residents who voiced their grievances on Friday, citing alleged extortion by the DPO and officers within the division.

Protesters took to the streets, blocking the main road leading to the community while carrying leaflets to express their discontent. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported on the unfolding situation.

Command spokesperson Olushola Ayanlade confirmed the commencement of the investigation in Akure on Saturday. He urged individuals with pertinent information regarding the alleged extortion to come forward and share it with the command.

"The command has launched an investigation into the details of the event and the alleged extortion," Ayanlade stated. He emphasized that while no formal report had been filed against the DPO, any concrete evidence would be invaluable to the investigation.

Ayanlade assured the public that the investigation's outcome would be made known and appealed to the state's residents to remain law-abiding. He attributed the protest to a misunderstanding between members of the driver’s union and police officers concerning the towing of an accident vehicle to the Igbara-Oke Divisional Police station. The situation was reportedly resolved by the local government chairman.
