Poland beats Moldova in Grosicki farewell game-Xinhua
WARSAW, June 6 (Xinhua) -- Goals from Matty Cash and Bartosz Slisz helped Poland defeat Moldova 2-0 in Kamil Grosicki's farewell match for the national team during a friendly in Chorzow on Friday.
The 36-year-old winger, who made his debut in 2008, played 95 games for Poland. He participated in the FIFA World Cups in 2018 and 2022, and in the UEFA European Championship in 2012, 2016, and 2024.
"It was a special evening for me as the national team means a lot to me. I knew I had to be ready for great emotions and that's what I feel. I'm proud I could be part of the Poland team for so many years," Grosicki told media after the match.
The host, considered a strong favorite, delivered as expected. Despite few chances created, Poland executed its game plan effectively. Led by coach Michal Probierz, Poland took 30 minutes to break the deadlock. Adam Buksa passed to Matty Cash in the penalty area, and the Aston Villa player surprised the goalkeeper with a volley into the far corner.
Poland then dominated possession. Moldova attempted to equalize but failed to threaten the goalkeeper. In the 88th minute, the host doubled its lead when Bartosz Slisz found space outside the penalty area and fired a low shot near the post to seal the victory.
Next week, both teams will compete in their FIFA World Cup qualification matches. On Monday, Moldova will face Italy at the Mapei Stadium in Reggio Emilia, while on Tuesday, Poland will take on Finland in Helsinki. ■
