Player Portrait: All eyes on Jasmine 'Jazzy' Davidson | FIBA Basketball

Published 14 hours ago4 minute read

MIES (Switzerland) - Standing out in a packed crowd of stellar-talented ballers who are all looking to extend the USA's golden legacy at the FIBA U19 Women's Basketball World Cup won't be easy. But if anyone can make it look deceivingly effortless, it's the classy and versatile Jasmine 'Jazzy' Davidson. She will land in Brno next month with real momentum and a rapidly growing following Stateside. But it also means that all eyes will now be locked on how she manages to grow her reputation on the global stage.

Not that she hasn't already impressed overseas. A gold medal at the 2024 FIBA 3x3 U18 Women's World Cup is evidence of that. She also showed out at the FIBA U18 Women's AmeriCup last year too and amassed an all-action line of 11.3 points, 3.8 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 1.3 blocks - plus a team-high 2.7 steals.

And as if that wasn't enough, she also became the first U18 player to shoot a perfect 100% from the field with five-or-more attempts for USA in two decades.

Since those two major international tournaments, she has become an unstoppable force at times. Holding the hot hand at the McDonald's All-American Game, she also took the 2025 Nike Hoop Summit by storm with a typically classy performance for USA as they took down a World Select team helped by her impressive 17-point contribution.

That only made even more people sit up and take notice - although she already had support baked in before she even got onto the court at the event. That's because the showpiece event unfolded in front of her family, fans and friends in her home state of Oregon.

But what exactly makes Davidson such an exciting prospect? So much so that ESPN changed their ranking recently to appoint her as the number one player in the final player rankings for the Class of 2025? Well, the headline is simple. She is the most complete player and a floor general who makes others better. It's something that will be music to the ears of coaches, teammates and fans of USA. Digging a little deeper into her game, the ground she covers and the fact that she is so graceful, composed and always seems to have more time than almost anybody else on the floor speaks volumes.

When she is operating in her highest gear, it's only about how she will slice and dice the defense.

Even when under intense pressure from opponents or the game situation, those positive elements rise to the surface more often than not. She can direct traffic as a playmaker, get downhill and use her length to brilliant effect to finish at the rim, or she will use her vision to create for others. While the three-point threat she poses might not be devastating and she doesn't make it rain too often, you definitely wouldn't be leaving her open on the perimeter any time soon. Because over-guard her or place even more attention on slowing her down, and she can kill you without the ball too. Her knowledge of the game and general IQ comes racing to the surface when she is cutting and slashing to the bucket - or even posting up with confidence.

When she is operating in her highest gear, it's only about how she will slice and dice the defense. Flipping back to the complete player point, you can tick off rebounding as a big upside, while defensively she can guard ballers inside or opponents who are more dangerous from downtown. What's not to love? Points have been made in various quarters about her ability to physically impose herself in a sport where the women's game has become ever more about power. But as she evolves, this will surely be something that flexes and alongside her skills and all-around finesse, she's looking like a top drawer baller right now.

While still steps to go, including these next ones in pursuit of another gold with USA, there is every chance that Davidson is going to start accelerating up the global talent ladder.

Winning more games, winning more medals and even more certainly - winning more fans. Not only in Brno, but also when she takes up her College spot with the USC Trojans later this year.
