The Boston Athletic Association on Wednesday revealed the new medal for the 2025 Boston Marathon.
“New medal unlocked,” the race organizers wrote in social media posts accompanying a video of the new medal for finishers.
The medal for the 129th Boston Marathon, set to take place on April 21, features a different design from more recent years. The medal has a different shape — a full circle compared to the half-circle atop a rectangular base of past years. The branding for the race’s sponsor — Bank of America — is also featured less prominently.
Last year, runners criticized the design of the finishers medal, which featured the bank’s name and logo stamped in color along the bottom edge, below the iconic unicorn symbol of the marathon. The 2024 Boston Marathon was Bank of America’s first year sponsoring the historic race.
“Nauseating!” wrote one user on a Reddit thread reacting to the 2024 medal.
While the medal for the 2025 marathon still includes the Bank of America logo (it is tucked underneath the race’s unicorn once again), this time, the company’s name is absent from the front of the award.
Users on X praised the change.
“Huge improvement over last year,” one user wrote. “Thanks for listening to feedback and implementing changes.”
“Looks like a big upgrade from last year. Great job,” wrote another.
The new medal also includes a reference on its back to this year’s race taking place on the 250th anniversary of Patriots’ Day.
