The Patriots are in the market for plenty of top end players, and wide receiver is one of their biggest needs.
So, while rumors circulate on New England kicking the tires of most top free agents and trade targets, DK Metcalf has become a major name to watch. The Seahawks receiver requested a trade and the team is reportedly open to moving him for the right price.
Metcalf will have plenty of suitors on the market, but according to one NFL insider, quite a few people in NFL circles believe he will wind up on the Patriots.
Daniel Jeremiah spoke about Metcalf on The Pat McAfee Show, and about why New England makes sense as a landing spot.
“Everybody in the league thinks DK Metcalf’s going to New England,” Jeremiah said. “It just makes too much sense, they have all the money, they have all the space, and they have no weapon. … If you go out in the first week and get Drake Maye a left tackle and a No. 1 wide receiver, now we’re cooking.”
The Patriots are in arguably the best situation to land many top free agents and trade targets like Metcalf. They have the most cap space in the NFL and lots of draft capital that could be used in trades.
Acquiring Metcalf would be an immediate upgrade, but they’d have to meet the Seahawks asking price, which is reportedly at least a first round pick. New England would not likely give up the No. 4 pick, so it would have to talk Seattle into its second round pick if a deal were to happen.
And, given the number of receivers coming available, including pending free agent Chris Godwin, the Patriots may not be willing to make a trade if they can get a quality receiver in free agency instead.
Another potential complication in the Metcalf sweepstakes: the receiver isn’t particularly fond of the Northeast. Metcalf said in an interview with Katie Nolan that New England “wasn’t a desirable location,” although he did clarify that he respects the Patriots organization.
There are still plenty more questions than answers regarding Metcalf, but if New England is truly a favorite to land the star, it would be a big splash to start the offseason.
