Patience Jonathan Promises to Campaign for Remi Tinubu in 2027

Former First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, has publicly declared her support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, ahead of the 2027 general elections. She has also stated that she will not be returning to Aso Rock Villa. This announcement was made during the Women Icon Leader of the Year award ceremony hosted by Accolade Dynamics Limited in Abuja on Saturday night, where she was honored. During the event, Jonathan acknowledged Folashade Tinubu-Ojo, the President’s daughter and Iyaloja-General of Nigeria, expressing her admiration and support.
Jonathan emphasized her commitment to supporting Senator Oluremi Tinubu, recalling the support that the Tinubus provided to her and her husband, Goodluck Jonathan, during their 2011 presidential campaign. She highlighted the longstanding relationship she shares with Remi Tinubu, which predates their time in Aso Rock. She stated, "I didn’t just know her (Senator Oluremi Tinubu) just because she’s the First Lady, no. We worked together. We worked as a group. Even when my husband was the vice president, Oluremi stood with her husband and supported us during our first election. They supported us. So, for me, I have a conscience. I cannot abandon my friend, whether you like it or not."
Dame Patience Jonathan expressed her belief in rotational leadership, describing it as a “turn-by-turn” system essential for national unity. She stated, “I believe in one president. I believe in turn-by-turn. When it’s your turn, I will support you. When it’s not your turn, step back—so that the country can move forward.” She also humorously added that she looks young because she has peace of mind and has no desire to return to the stress of public life in Aso Rock.
Furthermore, Jonathan voiced her support for the 35% affirmative action for women in governance, expressing her disappointment in the National Assembly’s repeated rejection of gender equality bills. She highlighted that during the Obasanjo administration, the Executive approved 35%, and her husband also maintained it. She lamented that men often dominate elective positions, shutting women out, and hoped that they would understand that women are there to support them, not take power from them.
Jonathan described the award she received as recognition of collective efforts in advancing women’s health and economic well-being. She acknowledged the tireless work of those who have worked alongside her to promote good health and economic development for women in Nigeria and beyond. She also highlighted the work of her NGOs, the Aurora Richard Foundation and the Women for Change and Development Initiative, which have empowered numerous women and youth through skill acquisition programs and supported children with critical health conditions.
Ms. Dofan Chizaram, the Managing Director and CEO of Accolade Dynamics, described the event as a celebration of individuals who have made significant contributions to Nigeria and Africa through leadership, mentorship, and community development. She emphasized the importance of acknowledging these contributions while the individuals are still alive.
