Panthers' Brad Marchand gets huge $24 million contract update that could involve 6 teams | Sporting News

Brad Marchand's incredible Stanley Cup playoffs run earned himself a lot of money.

The Florida Panthers' pending free agent was a huge key to lifting the trophy after his deadline trade from the Boston Bruins.

NHL insider Elliotte Friedman reports that before the playoffs, Marchand was viewed as a guy who could get a total contract value of $24 million, but that it has risen now.

Friedman adds that the list of suitors will include the Panthers, Maple Leafs, Mammoth, Kings, Devils and Capitals.

"Brad Marchand had a Ruthian spring as a player, quote machine, Dairy Queen pitchman and Instagram troller," Friedman wrote. "He said before the Final, he’d consider all options. At the same time, a few sources said he’d get at least $24 million on the open market. By the end, they were saying that was way too low. What you’re going to see here is different teams trying to hit the magic overall salary number, but at different terms and structures."

Jonathan Toews is returning to the NHL

The Panthers have Sam Bennett and Aaron Ekblad also seeking new deals, so their contract setup is tricky.

Marchand just turned 37, but it doesn't seem like he's slowing down much.

He's got 424 goals and 556 assists in his NHL career. Whoever signs him will likely get to watch him reach 1,000 career points, given that he's just 20 away.

And there are certainly a lot of teams that want to give Marchand a lot of money.
