Osun State Communities Protest Over Abandoned Road Infrastructure

Residents in Osun State have taken to the streets to protest the dire condition of their roads, urging Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration to intervene. In one instance, residents of Unity Community in Egbedore Local Council (also referred to as Unity Estate in Ido-Osun) protested in Osogbo on Monday over an abandoned road project. The project, a link road of over two kilometres passing through Halleluyah Estate to the community, was awarded three years ago, in 2022, during the administration of former Governor Gboyega Oyetola to Moshula Nigeria Limited.

Protesters claim that since the current administration came into office, the contractor has neglected the project, delivering substandard work. Mr. Taofeek Shehu, Chairman of the Community Development Association (CDA) for Unity Estate, stated that Moshula Nigeria Limited has abandoned the site. He highlighted that the little work done, such as drainage, has been washed away due to poor quality materials and erosion. Observations during the protest noted that while drainage and asphalt were laid along approximately one kilometre of the road, within Unity Estate itself, only drainage had been constructed, with some sections already damaged. Residents reported that many can no longer access their homes by vehicle, their vehicles suffer damage, and local businesses are affected as motorcyclists avoid the area.

During their peaceful protest, residents barricaded the estate’s entrance and exit, displaying placards with inscriptions including: ‘Government, come to our aid;’ ‘The contractor Moshula has failed us;’ ‘Moshula, fix our road; you’re paid;’ and ‘Abandoned road, forgotten people.’ Mr. Shehu appealed to Governor Adeleke, mentioning a rumor that the contractor claims he will not return to the site due to being an in-law to the governor. The community is urging the government to order the contractor to resume work and rectify the shoddy construction, emphasizing their desire to enjoy the dividends of democracy.

Responding to the concerns, Osun State Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, confirmed the government's awareness of the road's condition and stated that the contractor, Moshula Nigeria Limited, had been invited for a meeting to discuss the project.

In a separate but related development, residents of Aratumi and 24 other communities in Osogbo also staged a protest over the poor condition of their roads. They appealed to Governor Adeleke for the construction and rehabilitation of their roads, which connect about 25 communities from Kelebe along Iragbiji Road to ATMAN in Kobo area along Osogbo-Ikirun Road. Community leader Kehinde Olusegun explained that residents have been using their own resources for grading and repairs at least twice a year and are now seeking government intervention.
