Nigeria mourns the death of Sheikh Hadiyyatullah

Sheikh Abdur Rasheed Hadiyyatullah, the President of the Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria (SCSN) and Director of Sheikh Ibn Baz Shariah College, has passed away at the age of 83 after a brief illness. He was buried in his hometown of Iwo, Osun State, on Monday, April 28, 2025, amid widespread mourning.

President Bola Tinubu and Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke have both issued tributes, praising Sheikh Hadiyyatullah’s devotion to Islam and his contributions to national unity. President Tinubu described the late cleric as a "respected Islamic scholar who devoted most of his life to Islam and humanity," acknowledging his leadership in the Shariah council and his unwavering commitment to truth and justice. He also recalled the Council’s support during the 2023 elections.

Former President Muhammadu Buhari also mourned the loss, describing Sheikh Hadiyyatullah as a beacon of compassion and a true leader in Islam. He noted that he had the privilege of enjoying his friendship and advice throughout his years in office and that Sheikh Hadiyyatullah would be remembered for calling for peace at all times.

Governor Adeleke described Sheikh Hadiyyatullah as "a beacon of Islamic scholarship and an advocate for justice, tolerance, and unity," emphasizing his legacy in promoting peaceful coexistence and constitutional Shariah practice. He extended his condolences to the people of Iwo and the entire Nigerian Muslim community.

Professor Ishaq Akintola, the Executive Director of the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), hailed the deceased as an energetic, bold, and resourceful leader deeply committed to the welfare of Nigerian Muslims.

President Tinubu also expressed sadness over the death of Sheikh Abdur Rasheed Hadiyyatullah Iwo, noting his role as the founder and director of Sheikh Ibn Baz Shariah College of Nigeria in Iwo, Osun State. He highlighted Sheikh Hadiyyatullah’s uncommon leadership and direction to the Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria, emphasizing that he lived by the way of Allah and the teachings of Prophet Muhammed (PBUH). He recalled the invaluable support the Shariah Council offered him during the 2023 electioneering.

President Tinubu urged the Council to continue propagating the ideals of justice, religious tolerance, unity, peace, and harmony that Sheikh Hadiyyatullah stood for. He beseeched Allah (SWT) to forgive the late Sheikh, have mercy upon him, and grant him Jannatul Firdaus. Furthermore, President Tinubu sent condolences to Adeyemi Edun, CEO of Daniel Ford International, on the demise of his mother, Olufunmilayo Adunni Edun, at the age of 84.
