Osun communities protest abandoned road projects, seek intervention

Published 3 weeks ago2 minute read

The residents of Unity Community in Egbedore Local Council of Osun State, yesterday, embarked on a protest in Osogbo, over the alleged abandonment of a road project, three years after being awarded to a contractor.

They called on Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration to intervene in the development. Although the two-kilometre road project, which passes through Halleluyah Estate to the community, was awarded by the immediate past administration, the protesters bemoaned the neglect of the project, stressing that the contractor, Moshula Nigeria Limited, should be ordered to resume work.

Chairman of the Community Development Association (CDA), Taofeek Shehu, who spoke with journalists on behalf of the protesters, said: “Since the current administration came in, the contractor has not been forthcoming. He has abandoned the work, and the little one he did is substandard. The drainage has been washed away. The road is an eyesore now.”

However, when contacted, the state’s Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, said the contractor had been invited for a meeting over the project.

ALSO, residents of Aratumi and 24 other communities in Osogbo yesterday staged a protest over what they described as the bad conditions of their roads.

They, therefore, appealed to the governor to look into the dilapidated condition of their roads and construct them. A community leader, Kehinde Olusegun, said the essence of the protest was to expose the plight of those living in the communities and for those in government to come to their aid.

“We have gathered here today to appeal to the state government for intervention. The road leads to about 25 communities, from Kelebe along Iragbiji Road to ATMAN in Kobo area along Osogbo-Ikirun Road.

“For some time, within the communities, we have made a series of efforts to make some repairs, at least twice a year. We use our resources for grading the road. We are now appealing to the state government to give us attention so that our road can be rehabilitated,” he said.
