Osun Governor Adeleke Denies Defection Rumors

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has unequivocally dismissed widespread speculation suggesting his imminent defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), firmly reaffirming his unwavering loyalty to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). In a statement released by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, Governor Adeleke described the defection claims as false, unfounded, and politically motivated, urging the public to disregard what he termed as 'fake news'. The Governor stated, “I assure the good people of Osun that I remain part and parcel of the PDP family. I am not defecting to any party.”

These rumors have gained traction amidst rising political tension ahead of the 2026 Osun State governorship election, in which Governor Adeleke is widely expected to seek re-election. His performance in office and his commitment to the PDP are anticipated to significantly influence both internal party dynamics and his electoral prospects. The Governor's recent visit with the Adeleke dynasty to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu also fueled the speculations, a visit which Governor Adeleke's spokesperson clarified was merely a routine courtesy call, not an indication of any political realignment.

Governor Adeleke further reiterated his commitment to meticulously implementing his administration’s five-point agenda, promising to intensify efforts in delivering effective good governance and tangible democratic dividends to the people of Osun State. He called on citizens to remain focused and avoid distractions, emphasizing his administration's determination to sustain developmental gains across all sectors.

This is not the first instance where Governor Adeleke has had to address such rumors. His political journey itself has been marked by significant shifts. He entered politics in 2017 following the passing of his brother, Senator Isiaka Adeleke. At that time, Ademola Adeleke famously defected from the APC to the PDP to successfully contest and win the Osun West Senatorial bye-election, succeeding his late brother in the Senate. In 2018, he contested for governor under the PDP but narrowly lost to Gboyega Oyetola of the APC in a controversial election. Undeterred, Mr. Adeleke launched another gubernatorial bid in 2022, this time defeating incumbent Governor Oyetola in a tightly contested race, propelled by strong popular support, particularly among the youth and grassroots voters.

Party insiders and analysts suggest that the recent defection rumors may be part of a calculated effort to destabilize the PDP within the state or to sow disunity ahead of potential party primaries. The Osun chapter of the PDP, through its Chairman Sunday Bisi, also weighed in on the matter, describing the defection speculation as the 'handiwork of rejected politicians and the opposition'. Bisi asserted that those behind the rumors were 'jittery' over the towering achievements of Governor Adeleke’s administration across critical sectors and emphasized that the PDP remains 'intact, cohesive, and more committed than ever' to its mission of rescuing and rebuilding Osun State.
