Oscars To Open With 'Wicked' Medley By Cynthia Erivo And Ariana Grande - mxdwn Movies

Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo. Hollywood insider Matthew Belloni reported the news from his What I’m Hearing newsletter.

Belloni reports that the academy made the decision along with the show’s executive producers. “I’m told that the Academy and executive producers Raj Kapoor and Katy Mullan have decided to open the show with a Wicked medley, featuring stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo,” Belloni wrote. “Which makes sense. In a year with mostly little-seen nominees, the telecast is leading with its best asset. (The Academy declined to comment.)”

Songs from Wicked were ineligible for Oscar nominations due to not meeting the Academy’s requirements of being “written specifically for the motion picture.” However, the musical adaptation still received 10 nominations overall, including Best Picture, Best Actress for Erivo, and Best Supporting Actress for Grande. The film will be competing with films such as Sean Baker’s Anora, Denis Villeneuve’s Dune Part Two, and Coralie Fargeat’s body horror The Substance.

Wicked is available on VOD through Apple and Amazon Prime Video. The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release is also available to purchase.

The Oscars ceremony will simultaneously air on ABC and stream on Hulu on March 2nd.
