Governor James Orengo has unveiled two ambitious strategic projects in a move aimed at transforming Siaya into a regional hub for healthcare and sports.

According to Orengo, the construction of the Siaya County Referral Hospital Complex and the upgrading of the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium will be a game changer for Siaya.

“We are not just building facilities, but creating centres of excellence in healthcare and sports that will serve generations,” said Orengo.

The Siaya County Referral Hospital Complex, estimated to cost Sh1 billion, will be a 500-bed, state-of-the-art Level 5 facility.

Jointly funded by the National and County Governments, the complex will feature an Accident & Emergency Centre integrated with an outpatient complex and a doctors’ plaza, a 500-bed inpatient wing with surgical, medical, oncology, dialysis, burns, and high-dependency unit and a mother and Child Complex, comprising maternity, paediatric, and neonatal services.

The hospital will also incorporate sustainability features such as solar power, rainwater harvesting, energy-efficient systems, green landscaping, and a water recycling plant.

The Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium, located on a 4.5-hectare parcel within Siaya Municipality, will be expanded into a modern 20,000-seater sports arena.

According to the county boss, the facelift includes: extended and roofed terraces for spectator comfort, perimeter wall heightening to 2.4 metres for enhanced security, tarmacking of internal roads, and construction of a 300-vehicle parking bay and installation of a VIP entrance canopy

The stadium officially reopened earlier this year on January 2 and is expected to serve as a regional sports venue and a breeding ground for young talent.

Governor Orengo emphasized that both projects are part of a broader vision to position Siaya as a county of progress, driven by smart investments and strategic partnerships.

“These projects symbolize what collaboration between levels of government can achieve. We are building a future where Siaya residents access quality healthcare and where our youth have modern platforms to showcase and grow their talent,” he added.

He assured the residents that construction on both projects is expected to begin later this year, following the completion of planning by the joint technical team.
