One-day FUOYE VC lauds Tinubu's student loan initiative

The one-day Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye Ekiti, Miss Oluwafunmilayo Oluwaseun, has commended President Bola Tinubu for the student loan initiative, describing it as a life-changing intervention for millions of indigent Nigerian students.

Oluwaseun, a 23-year-old final-year student of Criminology and Security Studies, said the initiative had opened the doors of quality education to many students in public tertiary institutions who would otherwise be unable to afford it.

“I appreciate our dear President on the student loan initiative, which has been assisting millions of Nigerian students in public varsities to access education. This is a highly laudable initiative and we really thank him for this,” she said at a press conference marking the start of her 24-hour tenure as FUOYE’s one-day Vice-Chancellor on Tuesday.

Oluwaseun emerged winner of the university’s maiden One-Day VC contest, announced by the programme coordinator, Prof. Adebola Aderibigbe.

She used the opportunity to advocate for a similar engagement at the federal level, urging President Tinubu to consider introducing a one-day President of Nigeria initiative — akin to the one-day Governor model he pioneered in Lagos State — to help bridge the gap between Nigerian youth and leadership.

“Just as FUOYE initiated a one-day VC contest, I want to urge President Tinubu to kindly initiate a one-day President of Nigeria for Nigerian youths. This, I believe, will give Nigerian youths more opportunity to interact with the people in power and also bring to the knowledge of the President our yearnings,” she said.

Speaking on challenges affecting students, Oluwaseun highlighted unstable internet access, economic hardship, and mental health concerns. She said the university was already taking steps to address these issues, including submitting proposals for mobile network mast installations and launching a mental health advocacy campaign in collaboration with the university’s health centre and counseling unit.

In response to economic challenges, she announced a proposed on-campus commercial market to provide affordable essentials, support student-led businesses, and create part-time job opportunities.

She also unveiled FUOYE 360, a digital archive initiative created by semi-finalist Miss Mosopefoluwa Sanyaolu. The platform offers past examination questions to support academic excellence and reduce exam-related anxiety. Oluwaseun called for institutional support to expand its reach.
