The Attorney General of Ondo State, Dr. Kayode Ajulo, OON, SAN, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of a former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Mohammed Lawal Uwais.

Uwais, who served as Chief Justice of Nigeria from 1995 to 2006, passed away in Abuja on Friday morning.

In a heartfelt tribute, Ajulo described Uwais as a towering figure in Nigeria’s judiciary and electoral reform, leaving behind a legacy of integrity, wisdom, and transformative contributions to the nation’s democracy.

Ajulo hailed him as a beacon of integrity whose impact on Nigeria’s legal and electoral systems was profound.

“Among his most significant contributions was the call for the establishment of an independent electoral commission, a vital measure designed to enhance the integrity and transparency of Nigeria’s electoral process,” Ajulo said.

He further noted that Uwais’ committee championed the integration of technology in elections, advocating for electronic voting and result transmission to curb fraud and boost public confidence. The reforms also emphasized the critical need for voter education and equitable political party financing, ensuring elections were more accessible and just for all.

Reflecting on his personal experience, Ajulo recalled his first court appearance at the Supreme Court under Uwais’ leadership, describing his dignified presence as commanding respect and inspiring fairness.

“Though he has left this earthly realm, his legacy will endure in the hearts of those he inspired. We honour his memory by striving for the justice and fairness he championed,” Ajulo concluded.
