As Nigeria marked the 2025 International Workers’ Day, key legislators from Oyo State have reiterated the need for stronger protections and improved conditions for the Nigerian workforce.

Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly and Chairman of the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria, used the occasion to urge state legislatures to enact laws that promote job security, fair wages, and better working conditions.

“The Nigerian workforce is the backbone of our economy, and we must prioritize their welfare through effective policies,” he said. “I urge state legislatures to enact robust labor laws that ensure job security, equitable remuneration, and workplace protections. Workers deserve the assurance that their hard work is recognised and rewarded.”

Ogundoyin acknowledged the hardships faced by workers amidst inflation and unemployment and called for strategic reforms to ease financial burdens. He encouraged the federal and state governments to enhance social protection and implement policies that would offer workers sustainable livelihood opportunities.

“The essence of Workers’ Day is to honor the sacrifices and contributions of our workforce. We must ensure that labor policies align with global standards and offer practical solutions to the challenges workers face,” he added.

Meanwhile, Senator Sharafadeen Alli, who represents Oyo South Senatorial District in the National Assembly, extended his appreciation to Nigerian workers in a separate Workers’ Day message issued in Ibadan.

He praised their “resilience, dedication and unwavering contributions to the development of the state as well as Nigeria,” noting that they remain central to national growth despite economic challenges.

“We have to continually improve the welfare, safety and rights of workers,” Alli stated. He called on all levels of government to promote decent work conditions, fair wages, and professional development opportunities.

He reaffirmed his own commitment to pushing for worker-friendly legislation, continuous engagement, and support for employment initiatives that encourage economic justice.

Both lawmakers urged Nigerian workers to remain hopeful and united in the face of ongoing challenges, assuring them of their continued advocacy and legislative support.
