Ogun unveils initiative for maternal, newborn mortality reduction
The Ogun state government has launched a strategic initiative aimed at reducing maternal and newborn mortality, following the presentation of its implementation roadmap to Governor Dapo Abiodun by the leadership of the health sector.
The initiative, tagged the Maternal and Newborn Mortality Reduction Innovation and Initiative (MAMII), which is the brainchild of the SWAp (Sector-wide Approach) Office of the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammadu Ali Pate, targets critical gaps in maternal healthcare through evidence-based interventions, community engagement and strengthened health systems.
Speaking at the closing of a five-day co-creation workshop for the MAMII implementation design in Ogun state, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker, stated the government’s unwavering commitment to improving maternal and newborn survival rates in the state, noting that the initiative would take a holistic approach, addressing infrastructure deficits, gaps in human resources, and the integration of technology to ensure safer pregnancy and childbirth experiences.
“Our deputy governor, Noimot Salako-Oyedele, and the Coordinating Minister of Health, Professor Ali Pate, were here to open this co-creation workshop. You will agree that this underscores the importance of MAMII to the state and Nigeria as a whole.
“Through this initiative, Ogun State is taking a decisive step toward eliminating preventable maternal deaths by strengthening primary healthcare services, improving access to essential medical equipment, and fostering stronger community engagement,” Dr. Coker said.
