Ogun launches new initiative to curb maternal, newborn mortality

Ogun State Government has unveiled a new initiative aimed at reducing maternal and newborn mortality rates in the state, as well as addressing critical gaps in maternal healthcare through evidence-based interventions.

The strategic roadmap implementation was presented to the state governor, Dapo Abiodun, by the leadership of the health sector, ”tagged “Maternal and Newborn Mortality Reduction Innovation and Initiative (MAMII), which was the brainchild of the Sector-wide Approach (SWAp) initiated from the Office of the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammadu Ali Pate, targets critical gaps in maternal healthcare through evidence-based interventions, community engagement, and strengthened health systems.

Ogun State Commissioner for Health, Dr Tomi Coker, who spoke during the five-day co-creation workshop for the MAMII implementation design in the state, reaffirmed the state government’s unwavering commitment to improving maternal and newborn survival rates in the state.

Also speaking at the event, the Team Lead, MAMII, Dr Dayo Adeyanju, disclosed that the approach adopted is rooted in context-specific solutions tailored to the unique challenges faced in the state.

MEANWHILE, Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has charged personnel of the Amotekun Corps to conduct themselves with the highest level of integrity, respect for human rights and commitment to duty.

Abiodun gave the charge at the Ogun State Command of the Amotekun in Oke-Ilewo during the inauguration of 16 operational vehicles for the Corps.

The governor, who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Dr Toyin Taiwo, said that the administration would be committed to the safety of life and property of Ogun citizens.

He also said that the operatives should embrace collaboration with other security agencies in tackling crimes in the state.

The state’s Commandant of Amotekun, Brig.-Gen. Alade Adedigba (rtd), commended the governor for the donation of another 16 operational vehicles to enhance operations, as well as approval of another 500 personnel to be recruited by the security network.

IN another development, the governor, at the weekend, inspected ongoing road construction projects in Ogun East Senatorial District as part of the urban regeneration scheme of his administration.

Abiodun, during the inspection of the roads, said his administration had succeeded in rewriting Ogun’s developmental stride, which he said, must be sustained.

He, however, disclosed that his administration is building a dry port to further open up the state for more investment opportunities, in addition to the over 4,000 affordable houses that had been built for medium and upper-income earners in Abeokuta, Ilaro, Sagamu, Iperu, Ijebu-Ode, and Ota.

The governor also said that plans had been concluded to extend the Blue Rail Line from Agbado to Kajola, just as the Red Line would be extended from Okokomaiko in Lagos to Agbara in Ogun State.

He said 11 roads that have an economic impact on the lives of the people had been identified and awarded for reconstruction across the state, assuring that fairness, equity, and inclusivity would be adhered to when distributing projects.
