Obasanjo hosts Jonathan, Atiku, Ooni, and others

Nigeria has recently witnessed a series of tributes and reflections on the lives and legacies of prominent figures, including Chief Gabriel Akin-Deko, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, and the continued recognition of leaders like former President Olusegun Obasanjo. These events underscore the importance of acknowledging contributions to national development, unity, and the pursuit of justice.
Remembering Chief Gabriel Akin-Deko's Agricultural Vision
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, African Development Bank (AfDB) President Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, and Government College Ibadan Old Boys Association (GCIOBA) President Dr. Wale Babalakin, have lauded the contributions of the late Chief Gabriel Akin-Deko. Akin-Deko, a former regional Minister for Agriculture, was particularly noted for his role in the Western Region’s cocoa boom during Nigeria’s First Republic. At the launch of Akin-Deko’s autobiography, I Drink to the Future, dignitaries reflected on the region's thriving cocoa industry, which significantly boosted its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and provided livelihoods for numerous farmers.
Obasanjo described Akin-Deko as a valuable source of knowledge, recalling their discussions on agricultural policies and food security. Adesina acknowledged that the AfDB had adopted Akin-Deko’s farm settlements initiative as a model for improving Nigeria’s and Africa’s agricultural ecosystems. He credited Akin-Deko with pioneering Nigeria’s revolutionary farm settlement programs in the 1960s, which significantly improved farmers’ lives and attracted young people to agriculture. Babalakin emphasized Akin-Deko’s role in GCIOBA and called for greater recognition of individuals who contributed to Nigeria’s development, highlighting his dedication to Government College Ibadan and his lasting influence on agricultural development in Western Nigeria.
Tributes to Pa Ayo Adebanjo: A Champion of Truth and Justice
Former President Goodluck Jonathan and ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar recently honored the late Afenifere acting leader, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, as a man of truth and justice. They emphasized that Nigeria has lost an enigmatic elder statesman who believed in the unity of Nigeria. During condolence visits to Adebanjo’s residence in Lekki, Lagos, both leaders signed the condolence register and spoke of his remarkable qualities.
Jonathan described Adebanjo as not only a leader of Afenifere but a leader of Nigeria, possessing enormous wisdom and courage. He recalled Adebanjo’s participation in the 2014 National Conference, where leaders from across the country produced a comprehensive report. Jonathan expressed hope that the Federal Government would one day consider it for implementation. Atiku added that Adebanjo lived for unity and peaceful co-existence, describing his death as a monumental loss. He noted that Adebanjo always told the truth and served as a father, advisor, and guide.
Jonathan reiterated that no nation can grow without truth and justice, values that Adebanjo exemplified. He acknowledged Adebanjo’s pivotal role in the pursuit and sustenance of democracy in Nigeria. Numerous other dignitaries have also paid their respects, recognizing Adebanjo's significant contributions.
