NPP Rejects Electoral Commission's Proposed Rerun in Ablekuma North

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has vehemently rejected the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to rerun the parliamentary election in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North constituency. This contentious move by the EC follows disputes over the authenticity of election results from the December 7, 2024, General Election. Both the NPP Parliamentary Candidate for Ablekuma North, Akua Afriyie, and the NPP Deputy General Secretary, Haruna Mohammed, have expressed strong disapproval, asserting the decision is unwarranted and lacks consensus.
Akua Afriyie, speaking on Channel One Newsroom on July 2, voiced her profound dissatisfaction, arguing that the collation process was nearly complete, with only three polling stations remaining for declaration. She highlighted the EC’s prior testimony under oath in Parliament, which affirmed that only three polling stations were outstanding, making the sudden call for a rerun unjustifiable. Afriyie questioned the EC’s consistency and accused the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) of attempting to manipulate the situation to their advantage. She firmly stated, “We are not going to accept this decision.”
Echoing this sentiment, NPP Deputy General Secretary Haruna Mohammed, on Citi Eyewitness News, underscored that there was no agreement with the EC regarding the rerun, despite NPP representatives being present at the meeting. He pointed out that the EC’s own release indicated a lack of political party consensus. The EC had cited the failure of presiding officers to verify scanned Pink Sheets and the destruction of original Pink Sheets by party supporters at the collation center as reasons for the rerun. However, the NPP maintains that the results from the three outstanding polling stations are sufficient to conclude collation and declare a winner, insisting the EC should focus on finalizing these rather than organizing fresh polls where results had already been certified by party agents.
Mohammed emphasized the NPP’s commitment to opposing the rerun, stating, “The NPP is not going to give up on this particular fight.” He reiterated that the EC must complete the collation from the three still-outstanding polling stations. NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong is expected to address the public at a press conference to outline the party’s official position. Meanwhile, the EC has announced the rerun is scheduled for Friday, July 11, 2025, assuring the public of a transparent and peaceful process with security provided by the Ghana Police Service.
