‘No action yet against dummy schools in Gujarat despite repeated complaints’

Ahmedabad: The issue of dummy schools operating within the state remains uninvestigated, despite numerous complaints. A former board member recently submitted a formal request for an investigation into the matter. "The response was limited to issuing directives without implementing actual investigative measures," he said.
Recent investigations by the CBSE board in the state addressed concerns about dummy schools and their students, resulting in school notices and affiliation cancellations. "This action created anticipation for similar investigations in Gujarat board-affiliated schools. However, no such inquiries have materialised," the former member said.
According to educationists, students seeking admission to prestigious institutions like IIT, IIM, and medical colleges often bypass regular schooling after Class 10, attending coaching classes instead. These students pay substantial fees for nominal enrolment in dummy schools for Class 11 science stream. These establishments maintain fictitious teaching staff records and receive authorisation for Class 12 science practical examinations, passing students without conducting actual assessments.
"Despite formal complaints calling for investigation of these establishments, the district authorities' orders remained unexecuted, failing to identify any dummy schools in the state," the ex-board member added.
