Nina Cobham Announces Debut Album 'Basis Of A Pinky Promise' | News | Clash Magazine Music News, Reviews & Interviews
UK singer-songwriter Nina Cobham will release her debut album, ‘Basis Of A Pinky Promise’, on July 10th via AWAL.
Since her debut in 2019, with three character-building EPs under her belt, Cobham has rendered a tactile aural world with sun-dappled, Bossa-inflected songs that flit between English and Spanish. Her debut album is the culmination of her evolution as a songwriter, charting the prickly transitions that define one’s twenties.
At the heart of the nine-track collection is Cobham navigating trust issues – romantic and platonic. “I’ve always struggled with it,” she says, “but choosing to trust – whether in love, in friendships, or in yourself – is so important. A pinky promise is a small thing, but it holds weight. That’s what this record is about.”
With the album announce comes the titular track, ‘Pinky Promise’, co-created with Oscar Scheller, which lays out the deft balancing act between playfulness and a healthy dose of caution that underscores the full-length.
“’Pinky Promise’ came from an idea of; making the decision to being open and willing to risk it all and give everything to a relationship, on the basis of something perceived as ‘childish’ as a pinky promise; choosing to trust fully on the basis of some flimsy, small, demonstration, and taking it seriously. Throwing yourself in at the deep end, despite any reservations or worries. It’s playful and lighthearted but mixed with some lyrics about trust issues, there’s kind of a duality going on but they kind of meet with this playful intersection.”
This new era is a document of Cobham at 23 – young, in love, still learning.
