Published 3 hours ago2 minute read

Nigeria's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has reaffirmed Nigeria's dedication to promoting a fairer and more inclusive global system. This commitment was underscored during the BRICS Foreign Ministers Meeting in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where Tuggar addressed delegates on the crucial role of the Global South in reinforcing multilateralism.

Tuggar expressed gratitude to Brazil for hosting the meeting and acknowledged BRICS for granting Nigeria Partner Country status, emphasizing that this recognition demonstrates the bloc's commitment to inclusive multilateralism. He highlighted that Nigeria stands with BRICS in advocating for reforms that reflect current realities and empower the Global South, particularly in addressing complex global challenges such as climate change, technological disruption, and economic instability.

He emphasized the innovative and collaborative potential of BRICS, pointing to initiatives like the New Development Bank and ongoing discussions regarding a common payment system as crucial steps toward establishing a balanced global framework. Nigeria also aligns with the six priorities identified by Brazil’s 2025 BRICS chairmanship, which include contributions to peace and security, sustainable development, health cooperation, and the ethical governance of artificial intelligence.

Ambassador Tuggar characterized the Global South as an active participant in formulating global solutions rather than merely being a recipient of policies, emphasizing the significance of South-South Cooperation. He noted that Nigeria's youthful population, dynamic tech sector, and strategic geographic position make it a natural partner in advancing BRICS goals and strengthening intra-African trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Tuggar also advocated for urgent reforms to global governance institutions, especially the United Nations Security Council, to better represent contemporary global aspirations and challenges. He declared Nigeria's readiness to help shape a new era of global cooperation grounded in equity, solidarity, and mutual respect.

The meeting reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to actively contributing to multilateralism and creating platforms to address the pressing challenges facing the Global South.
