NFL Players to Compete in Flag Football at 2028 Olympics
NFL clubs have voted to allow NFL players to participate in flag football at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. This decision was made at the Spring League Meeting in Eagan, Minnesota. The resolution enables the league to collaborate with the NFL Players Association, the International Federation of American Football (IFAF), and Olympic authorities to establish rules for NFL player participation in flag football, which will debut at the 2028 Olympics.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell expressed excitement about the decision, stating that representing one's country in the Olympics is a significant honor for any athlete. He noted that the inclusion of flag football in the Olympics has generated considerable enthusiasm among NFL players who are eager to compete for their country on the global stage. Olympic rosters will be selected by each country's National Olympic Committees based on proposals from their respective National Federations.
IFAF President Pierre Trochet welcomed the vote's outcome, highlighting that it would add another dimension to the game-changing debut of flag football at the Olympic Games. He emphasized that the NFL, home to many international stars in American football, now provides an opportunity for these athletes to showcase their talents on the world stage. Trochet also thanked the NFL for its commitment to flag football in the Olympic movement, acknowledging the support of IFAF's 75 national federations.
The Olympic flag football competition will consist of six men's teams and six women's teams, each with 10 players. The game format will be five-on-five. NFL player participation will involve a tryout or qualification process before the Olympic competition. Flag football is governed internationally by the IOC-recognized International Federation of American Football, which includes 75 member federations across all continents. The most recent IFAF Flag Football World Championships saw participation from a record 31 nations and regions, reflecting the sport's rapid grassroots growth and its 20 million players worldwide.
LA28 Chairperson and President Casey Wasserman believes that the 2028 Flag Football tournament at the LA28 Games will be one of the most exciting competitions in Olympic history, and the inclusion of NFL players will elevate it to new heights.
