SYDNEY -- New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Chinese President Xi Jinping met in Beijing on Friday, Luxon's office said, seeking to manage challenges in their relations that have heightened of late in connection with growing Chinese clout in the South Pacific.

"My meeting with President Xi was a valuable opportunity to reflect on the depth and breadth of this important relationship, and to reaffirm our bilateral ties," Luxon said. The prime minister highlighted the "international rules-based system" and called on China to play a "key role" in "helping to resolve global challenges."
