New Supreme Court Judges Sworn In Ghana

President John Dramani Mahama of Ghana presided over the swearing-in ceremony of seven newly appointed Supreme Court Justices at the Jubilee House on Thursday, July 3, 2025. In his address, President Mahama emphasized the profound responsibility entrusted to the justices, urging them to perceive their robe of office not as a symbol of dominance but as a solemn public trust, embodying service, humility, and accountability. He called upon the judges to serve with unwavering dedication to justice, integrity, and humility, underscoring that their interpretations of the law must transcend mere text to reflect the spirit of Ghana’s democracy and resonate with the lived experiences of ordinary citizens. He implored them to infuse empathy, relevance, and a deep understanding of the people’s struggles into their legal judgments, aspiring for a legacy defined by reason, compassion, and fairness.

President Mahama reiterated his commitment to reforming Ghana's justice system to ensure it is more accessible and responsive to all citizens, irrespective of their status or income. He firmly asserted that justice must be a guaranteed right, not a commodity to be purchased. He highlighted the judiciary's pivotal role as the final custodian of the Constitution and a vital safeguard for civil liberties, noting that citizens turn to the Supreme Court when their freedoms are threatened or when justice appears distant. He stressed that a Supreme Court Justice’s role extends beyond legal interpretation; they are called to embody the highest ideals of fairness, impartiality, integrity, and courage, serving as stewards of justice and conscience rather than just arbiters of technicalities.

Furthermore, President Mahama emphasized the necessity for the judiciary to connect with the nation’s heartbeat, understanding the needs of low-income individuals, the struggles of women and children, and the anxieties of citizens who feel excluded or unheard. The seven confirmed Justices are Justice Sir Dennis Dominic Adjei, Justice Gbiel Simon Suurbaareh, Justice Senyo Dzamefe, Justice Kweku Tawiah Ackaah-Boafo, Justice Philip Bright Mensah, Justice Janapare Bartels-Kodwo, and Justice Hafisata Amaleboba. Their appointments followed rigorous parliamentary approval and vetting processes, with President Mahama acknowledging their vast experience and solid knowledge of the law.

Speaking on behalf of his fellow appointees, Justice Senyo Dzamefe assured Ghanaians of the court’s steadfast commitment to justice. He pledged that the new justices would dispense justice to all persons without fear, favour, ill will, or affection, ensuring equal justice under the law. Justice Dzamefe also expressed heartfelt gratitude to their families, particularly their spouses and children, for their unwavering support throughout their long and arduous journeys to the apex court. He reflected on the persistent encouragement from his family and invoked divine guidance, praying for the strength to fulfill the significant responsibilities entrusted to them, and asking for blessings upon Ghana and its people.
