New Supreme Court Judges Sworn In Ghana

President John Dramani Mahama has officially charged seven newly appointed Supreme Court Justices to uphold their oath of office as a profound public trust and a symbol of service, rather than one of dominance. During their swearing-in ceremony at the Jubilee House on Thursday, July 3, 2025, President Mahama underscored the immense responsibility inherent in their new roles, urging them to serve with humility, unwavering integrity, and a steadfast dedication to justice. He emphasized that the 'robe of honour' they now bear signifies a public trust and a commitment to accountability.

President Mahama further articulated that the justices' interpretations of the law must transcend mere textual reading, reflecting both the letter and the spirit of Ghana’s democracy. He urged them to infuse their judgments with empathy, relevance, and a deep understanding of the lived experiences and struggles of ordinary citizens. The President stressed that their legacy should be built on reason, compassion, and fairness, not just rhetoric. He also reiterated his administration's commitment to reforming the justice system to ensure it is accessible and responsive to all Ghanaians, asserting that justice must remain a guaranteed right for every citizen, irrespective of their status or income, and not a commodity to be purchased.

Speaking on behalf of his colleagues, Justice Senyo Dzamefe assured Ghanaians of the Supreme Court's unwavering commitment to dispensing justice without fear, favour, ill will, or affection, promising equal justice under the law for all persons. Justice Dzamefe also expressed heartfelt gratitude to their families, especially their spouses and children, for their enduring support throughout their long journeys to the apex court. He reflected on the perseverance required for their elevation, acknowledging the prayers and encouragement that sustained them.

The President highlighted the judiciary’s critical role as the final custodian of the Constitution and a vital safeguard for civil liberties, particularly during times when freedoms are threatened or justice seems elusive. He noted that the newly appointed justices, with their vast experience and solid knowledge of the law, are called not merely to interpret legalities but to embody the highest ideals of fairness, impartiality, integrity, and courage. The judiciary, he stated, must understand the 'heartbeat of the nation' and be sensitive to the needs and anxieties of all citizens, including low-income individuals, women, and children, ensuring that no one feels excluded or unheard. The seven confirmed Justices are Justice Sir Dennis Dominic Adjei, Justice Gbiel Simon Suurbaareh, Justice Senyo Dzamefe, Justice Kweku Tawiah Ackaah-Boafo, Justice Philip Bright Mensah, Justice Janapare Bartels-Kodwo, and Justice Hafisata Amaleboba.
